Is it safer to make a purchase online using a VPN, or is it safer to just use a different computer?

If you were purchasing something from an online store like eBay that you could get in trouble for ordering, would it be safer to order it through a VPN on your own device or to just use a different computer ?

When you make online purchases they still require parts of your real information (e-mail for order confirmations and/or receipts, tracking numbers, address for getting it shipped to you and for billing purposes, and a bank account or credit/check card number to make the payment [usually that’s the case, but if they support other forms of payment then maybe the address would be tied into it especially where checks and money orders are concerned. Not sure about Bitcoin since I never have enough to try it on a legitimate purchase]). You could create a throwaway e-mail address and you could use a PO box or have it delivered elsewhere, but that’s a whole lot of effort to just to stay “anonymous”.
